The view of the top of the door reveals many familiar names. Billie Holiday, Annie Ross, Eartha Kitt, Maya Angelou, Carmen McRae, Bob Dorough, Aaron Bridgers, Kenny Clarke and many others.

The artist who created the musical motif for the sign on the Mars Club door, Lobo Nocho, is named on this part of the door.

Ken Burns made a film for public television called Ken Burns Jazz that describes the careers of many artists whose names are on this part of the door, including Kenny Clarke, Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington. (Ellington's name is not on the door, but when you learn about Duke Ellington, by extension, you also learn about Billy Strayhorn.)

Maya Angelou has gone on from her early days as a singer and dancer to become a famous author and poet. Among her best known works are I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now and her recitation of her own poem at the 1993 Presidential Inauguration.
